ICE COTTON SUMMARYCotton slips as stronger dollar offset higher exportsICE cotton futures fell for a second straight session on Thursday, as a firmer U.S. dollar overshadowed a weekly federal report showing higher export sales.“The exports report was pretty good, especially with more sales to China, but a stronger dollar index is not helping,” said Jim Nunn, owner of Tennessee-based cotton brokerage Nunn Cotton.The dollar rose 0.5% against key rivals, helped by upbeat U.S. retail sales data. A stronger dollar makes greenback-denominated cotton costlier for buyers holding other currencies.The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s weekly export sales report showed exports of 237,500 running bales (RB) of cotton, up 53% from the previous week, with increases primarily for China, Pakistan and Vietnam.“U.S. harvest pressure is imminent and, in the absence of significant tropical activity, should move lower over the near- to medium-term,” Louis Rose, director of research and analytics at Tennessee-based Rose Commodity Group, said in a note.“The December contract should experience resistance near 95 - 96 cents and then near 97 cents and support near 89 - 90 cents and 85 - 86 cents over the near-to-medium term.”Total futures market volume fell by 1,835 to 10,952 lots. Data showed total open interest gained 194 to 273,386 contracts in the previous session.Certificated cotton stocks deliverable as of Sept. 13 totalled 64,455 480-lb bales, unchanged from 64,455 in the previous session. U.S. EXPORT SALES FOR WEEK ENDING 09/09/2021Cotton: Net sales of 284,800 RB for 2021/2022 were down 37 percent from the previous week, but up 9 percent from the prior 4-week average. Increases were primarily for China (183,900 RB), Pakistan (33,800 RB), Turkey (17,600 RB), Peru (12,300 RB), and Vietnam (10,100 RB, including 1,300 RB switched from Japan). Exports of 237,500 RB were up 53 percent from the previous week and 27 percent from the prior 4-week average. The destinations were primarily to China (86,600 RB), Pakistan (39,200 RB), Vietnam (35,600 RB), Bangladesh (25,000 RB), and Turkey (13,700 RB). Net sales of Pima totaling 9,600 RB were down 21 percent from the previous week and 26 percent from the prior 4-week average. Increases were primarily for India (2,600 RB), Peru (2,400 RB), Indonesia (2,000 RB), China (1,300 RB), and Japan (600 RB). Exports of 3,100 RB were down 74 percent and 57 percent from the prior 4-week average. The destinations were primarily to India (2,500 RB) and China (400 RB). Optional Origin Sales: For 2021/2022, the current outstanding balance of 8,800 RB is for Pakistan. Cotton harvest likely to be delayed amid flooding in Saurashtra region in GujaratHeavy rains impact moong, urad, sesame and groundnut crops prospectsThe latest spell of heavy rains in Gujarat may appear to have saved the State from sinking into a drought, but for the current kharif crops such as cotton, it has pushed back the harvest period by at least 15 days and also weakened the prospects of kharif groundnut due to waterlogging.Incessant rains, which started on Sunday and lasted till Tuesday morning in most parts of the Saurashtra region, has left the rivers swollen and fields flooded. “Early sown groundnut was ready for harvest. And in such water-logging, it will surely rot. Some of the late-sown groundnut won’t be much impacted,” said Ramesh Bhoraniya, a farmer from Rajkot.He also expressed concerns about the rains pushing back the first picking for the cotton crop. “The cotton bolls didn’t get a chance to open up. So, we don’t see that happening unless we have enough heat and sunlight. So, there will be a delay in first picking,” he said.Saurashtra has about 15.58 lakh hectares under cotton – about 70 per cent of the State’s total cotton area of 22.51 lakh hectares. For Groundnut too, Saurashtra has about 80 per cent or 15.34 lakh hectares of State’s total 19.09 lakh hectares.According to farmer sources, short-duration crops such as moong and urad were ready for harvest and may have faced the monsoon fury. The two pulses have an area of about 16,000 hectares and 29,200 hectares respectively. The two crops had seen encouraging sowing with urad cultivation up 50 per cent over last year and Moong area up by about 4 per cent.Also, another concern is for the sesame-seed crop. Saurashtra commands largest area in the State for sesame-seed cultivation at 50,500 hectares. “Sesame seed were ready for harvest. And the flooding would spoil the crop,” said another farmer.The Gujarat government will conduct a survey for the crop damage. Total kharif sowing in the State has reached 82.83 lakh hectares, which is about 3 per cent lower than last year’s 85.11 lakh hectares. ICE COTTON SUMMARYICE Cotton slips post WASDE production hikeICE cotton futures eased on Monday, pressured by a stronger dollar, as traders continued to assess a projected increase in output in the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) September supply and demand report.“The market is still digesting Friday’s report and today, the increase in production, up from August’ s surprise cut, is weighing, as the USDA made adjustments on planting numbers from earlier in the season,” Bailey Thomen, cotton risk management associate at StoneX Group said.In its September World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, the USDA projected US production at 18.5 million bales, 1.2 million bales higher than the previous month.The market will pay close attention to how production pans out until season-end, as well as adverse weather events and changes in the global consumption picture, especially for China, Thomen said.Tropical storm Nicholas, now about 140 miles (225 km) south of Port O’Connor in Texas with maximum wind speeds of 60 miles per hour, is forecast to reach the northwest Gulf coast as a hurricane. * The dollar index rose on Monday, making cotton more expensive for buyers holding other currencies.Total futures market volume fell by 19,680 to 13,022 lots.
