Looking forward to continuing UK support to RMG sector: BGME President
Farooq Hassan, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), expressed hope for the continued support of the British Government to Bangladesh's readymade garment sector.
He expressed his positive opinion on trade related issues between the two countries during a courtesy visit by British High Commissioner Robert Chatterton Dixon to Bangladesh at the BGMEA Complex on October 18 (Tuesday).
A press release said they discussed the current situation in the UK market, possible ways to increase apparel export share in the UK, the challenges of the industry and the areas the sector is focusing on to remain competitive.
He also talked about the cooperation between the UK and Bangladesh regarding the graduation from the LDC, possible changes to the tariff regime.
How to maintain Bangladesh's export competitiveness and maintain its position in the global market in the post-LDC era was also the point of their discussion, the press release said.
The President of the BGMEA thanked the High Commissioner for the UK's friendly cooperation in developing Bangladesh's garment industry, especially for the new "Developing Country Business Plan" to replace the existing GSP. He said that this will help Bangladesh a lot in increasing trade.
Meanwhile, the British High Commissioner praised Bangladesh's apparel industry for its significant progress in areas such as workplace safety and environmental sustainability. Vice President Shahidullah Azim, Khandokar Rafikul Islam, Director Barrister Shahreen Salam Oshi, Asif Ashraf, Tanveer Ahmed, Abdullah Hill Rakib and other officials of BGMEA were also present in the meeting.
