Congress MP: Telangana cotton growers are having trouble with procurement
Hyderabad : Cotton farmers in Telangana are facing several difficulties due to the procurement practices of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), Bhongir MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy said on Tuesday while handing over letters highlighting farmers' grievances to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh in New Delhi.
These concerns were raised by Telangana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Commission chairman Kodanda Reddy, he said. The MP said small and marginal farmers are particularly affected by the stringent procurement conditions of the CCI.
Bhongir MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy said on Tuesday while handing over letters highlighting farmers' grievances to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh in New Delhi.
The MP said small and marginal farmers are particularly affected by the stringent procurement conditions of the CCI. "Farmers are concerned over certain hurdles created by CCI on the pretext of quality check and supply mode. Though they understand the importance of grading, outright refusal to purchase their cotton in some cases is unacceptable," the MP said in his letter.
He also criticised local CCI officials for issuing verbal directions on packaging and other parameters, calling it an 'afterthought' which is adding to the woes of farmers. He said farmers use bags to protect cotton from contamination during transportation.
"CCI should accept the cotton brought by farmers without raising unnecessary objections. It is surprising that CCI is even objecting to the use of bags by farmers," he said.
