Adilabad will host Telangana's first cotton research center

Adilabad: The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has approved setting up of an All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) centre on cotton in Adilabad district. It is the first research centre in Telangana and will start operations in 2025 with dedicated budget allocation.

Adilabad, the second largest producer of cotton in the state, will benefit immensely from this initiative. The centre aims to provide national-level information on improved cotton seed varieties, enhance research infrastructure and strengthen the scientific community. It will also maintain direct coordination with the central office in New Delhi.

The centre will serve as an important resource for farmers, providing guidance on modern farming methods through field visits and training programmes. It will also raise awareness about advanced agricultural techniques and support the farming community in improving productivity and profitability.

During the combined Andhra Pradesh era, despite Telangana having a larger area for cotton cultivation, research centres were set up mainly in Andhra regions like Guntur and Nandyal.

Telangana currently has cotton cultivation on around 54 lakh acres, of which 8 lakh acres come from the erstwhile Adilabad district. Cotton from the district is exported to international markets. In contrast, Andhra Pradesh has cotton cultivation on around 10 lakh acres, yet more research centres were allotted here in the past.

After the formation of Telangana, activists of Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OUJAC) led by Dr E Dattatri staged protests and submitted memos to state and central officials demanding a research centre in Adilabad. Following their efforts, the state government approved the proposal and forwarded it to the Centre, resulting in ICAR approval.

Expressing gratitude, Dr Dattatri said the establishment of the research centre is a significant achievement for farmers, especially in Adilabad. “This centre will provide information on national-level cotton seed varieties, enhance infrastructure and strengthen the scientific community. Our team has worked tirelessly for over two years, submitting petitions and meeting leaders across party lines,” he said.

This centre is set to transform cotton cultivation in Adilabad, making it a hub of innovation and growth for the cotton industry in Telangana.
