Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Chairs Cotton-Growing States Meeting in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, chaired a consultative meeting of Agriculture Ministers and senior officials from all major cotton-growing states at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore.
Meeting Objective The primary agenda of the meeting is to promote cotton cultivation across the country and ensure the welfare of cotton farmers. A significant number of farmers attended the meeting to share their experiences, insights, and suggestions related to cotton farming.
Focus on Cotton Cultivation The discussions emphasized the need to create favorable conditions for increasing cotton productivity and profitability. Successful cotton cultivation depends on several key environmental and agronomic factors.
Key Requirements for Cotton Cultivation 1. Climate Warm Temperatures: Cotton thrives in warm climates, with ideal temperatures ranging between 21°C and 30°C.
Ample Sunlight: The crop requires 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal photosynthesis and boll development.
2. Soil Well-Drained Soil: Cotton is sensitive to waterlogging; hence, well-drained soil is essential.
Soil Fertility: The soil should be rich in organic matter and vital nutrients—especially nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K).
Additional Considerations for High Yields To achieve optimal productivity, the following practices are also crucial:
Adequate Water Supply: Timely and sufficient irrigation is necessary throughout the growing season.
Balanced Nutrient Management: Appropriate use of fertilizers is key to plant health and yield.
Effective Pest and Disease Control: Proactive measures must be taken to manage common cotton pests and diseases.
Use of Modern Farm Equipment: Mechanization can enhance efficiency and reduce labor dependency.
The meeting concluded with a strong commitment to boosting cotton farming through policy support, farmer engagement, and scientific advancements in agriculture.
