Early Cotton Sowing in Girna Kath, Maharashtra
Advance sowing cultivation on drip irrigation starts every year by the end of May in the villages of Girna Kath in Nandgaon taluka. This year it has already started. However, the area under cultivation is expected to decrease this year. Local farmers said that farmers are inclined towards maize crop as an alternative to cotton crop.
Last year, farmers had to face difficulties due to water shortage. In such a situation, cotton cultivation was done on drip irrigation in this area. This year there has been pre-monsoon rain. Since the water storage is satisfactory, farmers have started cultivation. However, it is estimated that this area will be less than the average compared to every year.
Cotton seeds were sold from May 16 this year. Accordingly, cultivation has started after the seeds became available. Cultivation is being done in Borale, Amod, Girna Dam area, Malgaon and surrounding villages of Nandgaon taluka. This is because the demand for maize is increasing and fodder and losses are less.
Along with this, due to the shortage of laborers, the trend of farmers towards cotton crop is decreasing this year. Apart from this, due to damage to the cotton crop due to post-monsoon rains, farmers have given preference to alternative crops.
Inclination towards maize crop
Farmers in the eastern part of the district are showing inclination towards maize crop as compared to cotton cultivation. Due to getting less price than the minimum support price last year, farmers are not enthusiastic about farming. Therefore, cultivation is expected to be less this year.
Cotton cultivation has increased this year as compared to last year. There is a demand for maize, but our family has increased the area, because the farmers of the area have reduced cotton cultivation.
