Rain Delay Worries Karimnagar Cotton Farmers
Karimnagar : Cotton farmers in the district are eagerly awaiting rains, having prepared their fields and, in some cases, even sowed seeds early based on the India Meteorological Department's forecast of an early arrival of the monsoon. Encouraged by consistent pre-season rains and high yields from last year's early sowing, many farmers had begun cultivating cotton much earlier.
The Centre's announcement of a hike in the minimum support price (MSP) for cotton by Rs 489 this season further boosted their optimism, leading more farmers to opt for the crop.
However, their hopes have been dashed as the weather has turned dry with no rains since the past week. The early-sown cotton seeds are at risk of wilting if there is no rain in the coming days.
Many farmers are now pinning their hopes on the forecast of rains in the next four days.
Meanwhile, agriculture department officials have warned farmers not to sow in the prevailing drought conditions. They have advised to delay cultivation till adequate rainfall is recorded.
According to the agriculture department, out of the targeted 48000 acres for this Kharif season, cotton has been cultivated in about 28000 acres so far.
