The rupee fell 9 paise versus the dollar to close at Rs 83.54 Thursday evening.
At the close of trade, the BSE Sensex closed down 456.10 points or 0.62% at 72,943.68. At the same time, NSE's 50-share index Nifty closed down 124.60 points or 0.56% at 22,147.90.
