Government’s Major Push to Boost Textile Exports: Rs 25,000 Crore Skill Development Initiative Proposed
New Delhi: The central government is considering launching a Rs 25,000 crore skill development initiative over the next five years to strengthen the country’s textile and garment industry. The objective of this proposed scheme is to train workers in modern technology and align their skills with the evolving needs of the industry, thereby enhancing the production capacity and global market competitiveness of the Indian textile sector.
According to sources, the government aims to develop a large pool of skilled workers through this initiative. Amidst growing uncertainties in global trade and rising geopolitical tensions, this move could prove instrumental in bolstering the manufacturing capabilities and exports of the Indian textile industry.
Skill Development to Get a Boost Under 'Samarth 2.0'
'Samarth 2.0', announced in the Union Budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, aims to modernize the existing skill development framework. The plan includes fostering better coordination between industries and academic institutions. Furthermore, there will be a strong emphasis on training workers to operate modern machinery and utilize new production techniques.
Significant Increase in Proposed Outlay Compared to the Previous Scheme
The Rs 25,000 crore proposed for 'Samarth 2.0' represents a substantial increase over the previous scheme. Available data indicates that under 'Samarth 1.0', approximately Rs 740 crore was spent on the skill development of textile workers over a five-year period ending in March 2026. Additionally, Rs 300 crore has been allocated for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
Awaiting Cabinet Approval
According to sources, the proposal from the Union Ministry of Textiles has already been reviewed by the Expenditure Finance Committee. It is now expected to be presented to the Union Cabinet soon for final approval. If the proposal is approved, it is expected to enhance production capacity, employment opportunities, and export competitiveness, while also increasing the availability of skilled workers in the textile and garment industry.
