Kharif Sowing Off to a Slow Start in Gujarat; Groundnut and Cotton Lead Early Activity

Kharif 2025 sowing has begun in Gujarat, but progress remains sluggish so far. Only 77,067 hectares have been covered, accounting for just 0.90% of the state’s average kharif sowing area of 8.56 million hectares, according to the latest agriculture department report. While groundnut, cotton, and vegetables have seen some initial activity, major cereal crops are yet to make an appearance in the fields.

Groundnut and Cotton Take the Lead

Among the early movers, groundnut has recorded the highest area, with 31,110 hectares sown, representing 1.78% of its normal coverage. Cotton follows closely with 34,011 hectares, achieving 1.34% of its average area. Vegetable crops, though smaller in scale, have shown the highest relative progress at 5,144 hectares, or 1.96% of their usual sowing area.

Oilseeds and Other Crops Lag Behind

Total oilseed sowing stands at 31,225 hectares, largely driven by groundnut. In contrast, soybean and castor sowing remains negligible, with only 52 hectares and 88 hectares covered, respectively, indicating a slow pickup in these crops.

Overall, the kharif season has started on a muted note, with significant acceleration needed in the coming weeks to match normal sowing trends.
