Khargone Cotton Auction Begins; First Bid Touches ₹8,411 per Quintal
The new cotton season kicked off on Monday at the agricultural produce market (mandi) in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh's largest cotton-producing district. Balkrishna Patidar, former Minister of State for Agriculture and Khargone MLA, inaugurated the auction proceedings with a traditional prayer ceremony at the market located in Anand Nagar. The opening bid for the new season was recorded at ₹8,411 per quintal. SIS
Farmers arrived at the market in large numbers with their cotton produce on the very first day of the season. Approximately 10,000 quintals of cotton arrived, transported in over 500 vehicles and 100 bullock carts. Farmers, traders, and public representatives were present during the auction. Following the prayers, the bidding process began amidst chants of "Jai Balaram." SIS
The first lot to be auctioned belonged to farmer Ashwin Dangi. Kalyan Agrawal of KK Cotton placed the highest bid of ₹8,411 per quintal for it. Meanwhile, cotton with higher moisture content also sold at prices ranging from ₹7,000 to ₹8,000 per quintal. The farmers appeared enthusiastic about the good prices received on the very first day. Khargone MLA Balkrishna Patidar stated that the cotton crop is in excellent condition this year due to good rainfall. The absence of rain in September so far has helped maintain the quality of the cotton. He expressed optimism that as the moisture content in the cotton decreases, farmers will secure better prices, potentially reaching up to ₹10,000 per quintal. SIS
Cotton trader Kalyan Agrawal noted that cotton production in the international market is expected to be lower this year, a trend that could impact the domestic market as well. He added that farmers are likely to receive better prices as the moisture content in the cotton drops. SIS
Farmer Kunal Dangi mentioned that his cotton fetched a good price during the inaugural auction. Given the healthy state of the crop, he expects cotton prices to remain favorable in the future. A large number of farmers, traders, and public representatives, including Market Secretary Sharmila Ninama, were present to mark the start of the new season.
