Compared to Thursday morning's closing price of 87.51, the Indian rupee fell to a new record low of 87.57 per dollar on Thursday.
At close, the Sensex was down 213.12 points or 0.27 percent at 78,058.16, and the Nifty was down 92.95 points or 0.39 percent at 23,603.35. About 1871 shares advanced, 1907 shares declined, and 124 shares unchanged.
