India has lagged behind in sowing of Kharif crops for the year 2022 as compared to last year. In fact, according to the data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, summer crops were planted in 40.67 million hectares till July 8, 2022. Which is 9.3 percent less than a year ago. Experts believe that due to unequal distribution of rains, farmers have lagged behind in planting major Kharif crops like rice, maize, soybean. However, good rains are expected in the next week and farmers have chances to recover the sown crops.
Summer sown crops are sown in the monsoon months of June and July, while harvesting begins in October. The ministry said that about 7.2 million hectares were planted with rice, which is significantly less than the 9.5 million hectares last year. If there is not enough rain in these areas in the next few days, there may be a decline in the area and yield.
India has received normal rainfall since the start of the monsoon season on June 1, but major rice-growing regions have received 46 per cent less rainfall. In July, the most important month for planting summer crops, India is likely to receive monsoon rains between 94% and 106% of the long-period average, the Meteorological Department said last week. The dealer said sowing has picked up pace in the southern and central states in the last few days following good rains in the region.
With India being the world's largest exporter of rice, and accounting for over 40% of global rice trade, a reduction in production could force New Delhi to curb rice exports. Soybean was planted in about 54 lakh hectares, which is 22 percent less than a year ago. Corn was planted on 3.18 million hectares, and was down 24%. Sowing of sugarcane and cotton remained almost unchanged in 5.3 million hectares and 8.5 million hectares respectively.
