New CCI Rule: Cotton will now be sold within the district: Farmers from outside districts barred, efforts underway to prevent fraud
The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has taken a major decision regarding cotton procurement. Farmers in Khandwa, Khargone, and Burhanpur districts will now be required to sell their cotton in the markets within their own districts. Farmers from neighboring districts will no longer be able to come and sell their cotton.
CCI states that this rule aims to bring transparency to cotton procurement and prevent fraud by traders.
Farmers will face difficulties
Previously, farmers could sell their produce in the market of any district, saving them on transportation costs. Now, they will have to sell their produce only in the market within their own district, even if it is far away. This could cause problems for farmers.
Attempt to prevent fraud
CCI officials say that this rule will prevent fraud and allow only eligible farmers to sell their produce. Previously, traders used to fraudulently sell cotton in farmers' names, but this will no longer be possible.
3,200 farmers have registered
So far, 3,200 farmers have registered to sell cotton in Khandwa district. These include 2,000 from Khandwa and 1,200 from Mundi.
25% of cotton came from outside districts
Previously, CCI used to purchase 25% of its total cotton from outside districts. However, with the implementation of this rule, cotton from outside districts will no longer be procured.
CCI's reasoning for the ban
CCI's procurement in-charge, Chandrakishore Sakome, says that with this rule, the district's produce will be purchased within the district itself. Some traders used to sell their cotton in markets across the state or districts. But now they will no longer be able to commit such fraud.
