Farmers of Madhya Pradesh are choosing cotton over maize and chilli

Mannalal Jaiswal, Vice President of Madhyanchal Cotton Association is telling about the cotton farmers in Madhya Pradesh.
This season cotton is selling at more than double the MSP. Farmers are very happy to get the desired price and this is the reason that the area under cotton is expected to increase in the coming season. According to experts, only in Madhya Pradesh, the area is expected to increase by 20 percent. It is being said that a large part of the farmers who had cultivated maize and chilli this time in the state are turning towards cotton cultivation.

Cotton sold for 13 thousand rupees in Khargone Mandi
Mannalal Jaiswal, Vice President, Madhyanchal Cotton said that the prices that cotton farmers are getting are attracting the entire farming community. On Thursday, 7 April, cotton was sold in Khargone Mandi at a historical price of Rs 13 thousand. Fardar quality cotton is also being sold at a price of Rs 11,400. I have spoken to many farmers, who have made up their mind to sow cotton this time, leaving the cultivation of maize and chillies. The only reason why farmers are turning towards this is the current price of cotton. The cost of cotton per kg is Rs.25-26 per kg to the farmer whereas this season he has got Rs.100 per kg of cotton.

Sowing of cotton starts from Akha Teej
Regarding the quality of cotton, Mannalalji said that the cotton crop in Madhya Pradesh was good this time too, the continuous rains in the month of Bhadau damaged the crop. Actually, the farmers of Madhya Pradesh believe in early sowing of cotton. They believe that late sowing doesn't bring much better yield. Most of the farmers start sowing from the auspicious time of Akha Teej. As a result, the crop is completely ready by the time Bhadau arrives and it is difficult to save the crop from heavy rains in Bhadau. So the quality of the crop is good but the percentage of arrival is slightly reduced.
